Denver Pilot Program Assessed by CTAC in Four-Year Study

BOSTON - March 15, 2003 - The Community Training and Assistance Center (CTAC) announced today that it has received a $750,000 grant to fund the fourth and final year of its study of teacher performance pay, and its impact on student achievement, in the Denver Public Schools.

The Denver Public Schools and the Denver Classroom Teachers Association are jointly conducting the Pay for Performance pilot in sixteen schools, which is intended to link teacher compensation to student achievement. CTAC is conducting the comprehensive research study to the new payment approach's impact on student achievement. CTAC is entering the fourth and final year of the study.

The research grant was provided by Rose Community Foundation, which pooled funds for the project with the Broad Foundation, the Daniels Fund, the Sturm Family Foundation, the Denver Foundation, the Donnell-Kay Foundation, the Piton Foundation, and an anonymous donor.

"One of the interesting findings is that linking what teachers earn to what students learn can have the salutary effect of helping a district to operate more effectively in support of student learning," said William Slotnik, CTAC's executive director. "Changes in district practice that are necessary to advance Pay for Performance also tend to support quality teaching and enhanced learning."

CTAC published a midpoint report of the study, Pathway to Results: Pay for Performance in Denver.
